Wild Ginger

Not actually related to ginger used in cooking, it gets its name from its fragrant smell. The elusive dark purple flowers bloom in spring and are hidden underneath the leaves. Pollination happens via beetles, that love the funky scent of the flowers. Indigenous people of B.C. have used wild ginger for medicinal purposes, but it should be used with caution because of its toxic properties in large quantities.
